The largest group we have sent
Six of our juniors travelled to the national youth championship this month, competing across the under-10, under-14 and under-16 sections. It is the largest delegation the club has sent.
Two finished in the top half of their sections in their first national event, which is a harder result than it sounds: most of their opponents had played a full season of rated chess.
What we learned
The gap was not in openings. It was in time management in the last hour of a long game — the thing that is hardest to teach at the demonstration board and easiest to fix with practice at the clock.
